A Real Housemate Search: Writing the Ad for a Senior With a Big Dog

A Real Housemate Search: Writing the Ad for a Senior With a Big Dog

Author Ellen Dudley, Posted on October 21, 2025

Well, here I am again,* still looking for a housemate.

I have a new job as an Administrative Assistant (half time) for a not-for-profit organization – and if I can get someone to live here with me I may just be able to pay my bills and my mortgage and my taxes and get some stuff on the house fixed. I do not know how anyone can live on Social Security. I sure haven’t been able to do it but I keep on keeping on.

My dog seems to have survived his cancer surgery and my cat seems to be a year and a half younger than I thought he was, I don’t know how I screwed that up but it seems I did. He’s not 12 but 10.5.  I am truly glad for that… especially when he wakes me up at half past five in the am, telling me that it’s time for breakfast and I’m not ready to eat for another hour and a half.

Oh, yay, the sun just came out!  Hooray and hallelujah, I thought it wasn’t going to happen till sunrise tomorrow. I am very glad.  I am having some help from my friend Annamarie to get a housemate and I am very glad for that too. Must be a female because the 160 lb. Rottie hates men but does love women so she will have to be a BIG DOG lover and a 16 pound cat lover too . I don’t know how I grow them so big but they seem to be that way.

I hope to have my next blog post be an announcement of a housemate here,  Annamarie is helping me and we’ll meet a prospect this week. Maybe it will be good news coming soon!!

Commentary

Annamarie here. Yup, I’m helping Ellen.  There’s been a long hiatus in Ellen’s search because in March she had a bad fall with serious damage and has been recovering slowly. (I wish she had had a housemate already when the accident happened!). We wrote an ad for craigslist and I posted it. Here’s how her ad reads:

“Housemate Wanted – Marlboro

Senior woman,  giant dog, and 20 lb cat seeking female housemate. Your room: lovely recently finished long room with sloping ceiling, 2 roof windows and casement windows at each end. Has a bed but otherwise unfurnished. Private bathroom downstairs. Low rent in exchange for some help around the house. Duties to be determined. The home is close to Route 9. Must like big dogs and be tolerant of disorder. No smokers. Would like a convivial relationship with occasional shared meals. $500 a month. First month, last month and $250 security deposit. References required. Interested?  Contact dummerstonhomeshare@gmail.com. Say something about who you are and why you are looking.”

Graduates of Sharing Housing 101 or Discovering Shared Housing should recognize the six elements of a good ad. So far we’ve had about six or seven inquiries. Only one of those was a good enough fit to have a telephone interview. It turned out that that person really was worried about a “big dog” so we agreed this situation wasn’t a good option for her. For different reasons none of the other inquiries were a good enough fit to go to the step of meeting in person.  Ellen will meet the potential housemate on Thursday. We shall see.
